Life should be nothing more than lazy Sunday afternoons and lots of hot sex for these two Marines and their favorite Redneck, but life never goes the way it should. Tempering explores what happens when life takes a hard left turn for Alex ''Rigger'' Roberts, Jim ''Rock'' South, and Richard “Dick” Main.
This Sean Michael Classic stands on its own, testing the strength of the relationships between these extraordinary men as a single event shatters their world and makes them build it over again, stronger than before. All of the wonderful heat and humor expected from these characters is in Tempering, but so is a core of pure steel that makes them not only likeable, but admirable.

JARHEADS SERIES: VOLUME 4 (chronologically), BOOK 2 (written second, as far as I can tell)Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 8/10
PROS:
- A PLOT! Not the world's best, this is true, but there is SO much more going on character-wise in this novel than in the previous 3 Jarheads novels that this volume is a vast improvement over the earlier ones. The plot isn't even the sort I typically enjoy (the majority of the story centers around a gay-bashing and the emotional/psychological issues that arise as a result), but I was surprised and delighted to read a story about these 3 characters that contained more than just sex every other page.
- The characterizations of the three men are solidified and expanded upon in this book. I have a significantly stronger picture in my head of the type of man each of the main characters is. Trauma brings out people's true characters, and Rock, Rig, and Dick all prove to be strong and protective of each other in different ways. Each character (at different times) forms the glue that holds the three men together: Rock is gruff and physically protective, Rig is the one each of the others truly connects to, and Dick refuses to let their relationship fall apart in the aftermath of the attack and throughout the healing process.
- The proclamations of love I have been craving since reading the first Jarheads novel are (finally!) here, in almost every combination. Two of the guys say "I love you" to both of the others, and the third says it to one of his partners.
- There are several very sweet, emotional scenes/chapters, especially when the characters celebrate Rock and Rig's 10-year anniversary and their 5-year anniversary as a threesome.
CONS:
- This isn't an easy read. It's emotionally exhausting (for me, anyway, because I've gotten so attached the characters as I've read the series) and gut-wrenching and painful. The character of Dick is especially tragic. As much as he feels to me like the integral screw that keeps the threesome together at times, he struggles constantly with feeling like the third wheel because he recognizes that Rock and Rig's feelings for each other are stronger than their feelings for him. The other two repeatedly assure him that they're a 3-man unit, not a 2-man with an add-on, but it's still sad to me.
- The passage of time caught me off-guard more than once; when Rock says casually to another character that he and Rig have been together for 8 ½ years, my eyes widened and I thought, "Where did the time go?" Overall, though, this isn't really a complaint. The entire series is essentially written as a bunch of vignettes showing slices from the men's lives together, and it serves as a beautiful tribute to a relationship among men whose love goes beyond sex (even if they do tend to have a LOT of it).
- The ending of this novel is bittersweet (not sad, by any means...the guys are together and in love and happy): at the end of it the characters are feeling the effects of aging and of an intolerant society and the emotional trauma they've all experienced.
Overall comments: This is by far my favorite of the Jarheads books. I had about decided not to read anymore when I was halfway through Personal Leave, which I read before this one, simply because the earlier books are about sex and little else. But this one brought me back to Amazon to order Volume 5, and I think even if that one returns to the 90% sex / 10% beer formula of the earlier books, I'll still like it, just because I've read the emotional journey related in Tempering.

Tempering Jarheads Book 4 edition by Sean Michael Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I've read this book and the others in the series so many times. It's always a great read! Authors books always leave me wanting to read more if his works!!
This follow-up to "Three Day Passes" was great. It had no surprises like "Three Day Passes" but it continued the love story of Rock, Rig, and Dick (Pretty as Rig calls him). All three bonds deepening as they find their place in the relationship and keep it whole during the trying time of unrest and change.
Love the mix of these three men together. Love the level of intimacy, humor, comfort, and emotion displayed throughout. So far a terrific series and I can't wait for the next installment.
Rigger, Rock and Dick are back. This second novel in the Jarheads series is much better than the first. The characters are much more developed, and there is an interesting storyline involving the gay bashing of Rigger. Of course there is still a lot of sex, but now there's a clear emotional bond shared amongst these three men. If you liked the first book in this series, then you will definitely enjoy this book as well.
THIS IS THE THIRD BOOK IN SEAN MICHAEL'S JARHEAD SERIES AND I HAVE TO SAY IT IS UP THERE WITH THE FIRST TWO. I THROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK BECAUSE RIGGER FINALLY GETS MAD ABOUT SOMETHING HE DISCOVERED HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS GONE FOR 4 MONTHS DUETO HIS JOB. DICK LET HIM KNOW HE WAS ABLE TO GET ROCK OFF IN A WAY RIGGER WHO HAD BEEN ROCK'S LOVER LONG BEFORE DICK BECAME OF PART OF THEIR LIVES WAS UNABLE TO DO. NOT BECAUSE HE COULDN'T IT WAS BECAUSE ROCK DIDN'T LIKE TO BOTTOM SO RIGGER DIDN'T INSIST OR PROD HIM INTO DOING SO. IT APPEARS DICK IN FOUR MONTHS DID SOMETHING RIGGER HADN'T DONE WITH ROCK IN THEIR MANY YEARS TOGETHER. IT ALL CAME ABOUT WHEN DICK SAID HE WANTED TO FIST ROCK. RIGGER COULDN'T BELIEVE HE HEARD RIGHT. RIGGER EXPLAINED ROCK DIDN'T ENJOY GETTING F----- LIKE THEY DID. HE WENT ON TO ASK DICK HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ROCK GET OFF BY BEING F-----? DICK SAID YES I HAVE. KNOWING WHAT TRANSPIRED BETWEEN HIS LOVERS DURING HIS ABSENCE CAUSED RIGGER TO HURT INSIDE. DICK INSISTED HE WANTED TO FIST ROCK AND RIGGER SAID TO COUNT HIM OUT. MORE WAS SAID BUT I'LL LET YOU READ WHAT ALL TRANSPIRES BETWEEN THIS TRIO. TO TELL THE TRUTH IF I HAD BEEN RIGGER I WOULD HAVE SAID TO HECK WITH ALL THIS AND LEFT. AT LEAST THEN HE WOULD HAVE DISCOVERED IF HE WAS TRULY LOVED BY ROCK AS MUCH NOW AS WHEN THEY FIRST BECAME A COUPLE. IF YOU HAVE READ THE FIRST TWO JARHEAD BOOKS THEN "TEMPERING" IS A MUST READ.
Jeeze -- I've been in a committed love relationship for over 23 years, but this book made me ache to be in a Triad, not only for the sex but also for the emotional contribution of two other partners to the relationship as a whole! (Obviously, such a scenario requires the RIGHT partners.) The sex was more than hot (involved about 70% of the book), and the variations in sex roles was awesome, but the plot line was also gripping and moving. When their relationship "clicked," each of the three guys contributed something essential to the other two. I am not certain that the original relationship between Rock and Rigger would've survived the events of this book without Dick. The emotional bonds between the three were badly shaken by the violence against Rig; that they would work their way through the shattering effects was in serious doubt for much of the book. When they finally did manage to put the parts of their relationship back together, this reader was warmed and happy with the results. The small steps forward, sometimes followed by steps backward and threats of break-up were thoroughly credible. Strongly recommended for both the sex scenes and the plot line.
